Can I really bring my cultural identity to work?

At Rising Legacy, we deeply believe that leaders with multicultural identities bring a unique and powerful advantage to the table.

Our cultural background is a superpower! Our unique perspective is a springboard for building authentic connections, fostering trust, and inspiring collaboration – all of which drives meaningful innovation for organizations.

Simply by leaning into your identity, you can transform your team dynamics! To hype you up on this superpower, I want you to know these things:

Your cultural identity is a celebration of humanity.

As multicultural women leaders, we hold a powerful opportunity to create spaces where differences shine and our shared humanity is celebrated. Lead with openness and vulnerability – share your cultural stories and encourage others to do the same. By doing so, you invite authenticity and build an environment where everyone feels they belong.

Your cultural identity creates connection.

Teams, especially remote and global teams, are increasingly looking for connection. Here are some ways you, as a multicultural leader, are uniquely positioned to nurture connection:

  • Celebrate together with culture spotlights: Dedicate time in team meetings to highlight traditions, holidays, or dishes from different cultures. It’s a fun way to learn about each other and create a sense of belonging.

  • Create a “Roots and Routes” board: Whether virtual or physical, let team members share a photo or short story about where they’re from and the path that led them to their current role. It’s always amazing to see the diversity of journeys!

  • Facilitate a “Values in Action” conversation: Have team members share a value from their culture (like collectivism, or hospitality) and discuss how it shapes their approach to teamwork, problem-solving, or leadership. Watch cultural differences turn into shared strengths.

  • Influence cross-cultural collaborations: Pair up team members from different backgrounds for projects or even informal mentoring. It’s a surefire way to turn diverse perspectives into innovative solutions.

When you create space for authentic connection, you send a clear message: We need each other’s different strengths and perspectives! I’ve seen so much magic happen when people feel they’re valued for the unique perspective they bring to the table.

Your cultural identity strengthens your team.

Curiosity and a desire to grow are at the heart of inclusive leadership. As a leader, you get to approach every interaction, from your 1:1s to project retrospectives, with a genuine interest in learning from others – this is a quality you can cultivate! And by modeling this mindset, you inspire your team to embrace diversity as a source of strength. The possibilities really are endless when teams trust and value one another.

Your cultural identity is your legacy.

Your approach to leadership has the power to spark connection, trust, and innovation among your team. By celebrating your cultural identity, encouraging others to do the same, and finding strength in diverse approaches and perspectives, your superpower will shine!!!

Lead the way,
